2024 Marine Rescue SAREX at Shellharbour

On Saturday, May 25th, volunteers from South Coast Branch SLS joined forces with Marine Rescue NSW and the water police to perform a major search and rescue exercise (SAREX) at Shellharbour Marina. This collaborative exercise is held to train and coordinate the combined work of various emergency response teams efficiently.

Over 60 volunteers took part, demonstrating their skills in radio operation, emergency management, and on-water response. The exercise involved simulating an emergency call from a yacht that had overturned in heavy seas, requiring the rescue team to locate people (mannequins) and other items from the vessel in the water.

Marine Rescue NSW Illawarra Inspector Massey praised the exercise as a great success, noting the exceptional performance of all volunteers both in and out of the water. We at South Coast Branch SLS highly value these training opportunities for our members to practice their skills and ensure we are prepared for real emergencies.
